A LOCAL LAW TO AMEND ARTICLE 2, SECTION 2.02 OF THE PUTNAM COUNTY
CHARTER ENTITLED “TERM”.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the County of Putnam as follows:
Section 1.
Article 2, Section 2.02 of the Putnam County Charter is hereby amended to read as
follows:
§ 2.02. Term.
A. The County Legislators shall be elected for terms of three (3) years at the general
elections hereinafter provided and every three (3) years thereafter as follows:
(1) At the general election held in November of 2002, County Legislators from
Legislative, Districts Two, Three and Eight shall be elected for said term of
three years.
(2) At the general election held in November of 2003, County Legislators from
Legislative Districts One, Four and Seven shall be elected for said term of three
years.
(3) At the general election held in November of 2004, County Legislators from
Legislative Districts Five, Six and Nine shall be elected for said term of three
years.
B. The County Legislators shall serve a maximum of four (4) terms, regardless of the
fact that a “term” may not have been three (3) years, and whether or not
consecutive, in his/her lifetime.
C. For the purposes of this Section, the service of any portion of a term, no matter
how small, shall be considered a full term.
D. In no instance may a Legislator serve more than four terms or 12 years, whichever
is less.
E. Any person serving more than four (4) terms or twelve (12) years as a Legislator at
the time of the adoption of this local law, shall be permitted to run for one (1)
additional three (3) year term.
Section 2.
This Local Law shall take effect February 1, 2014, and is subject to referendum on
petition in accordance with the provisions of Section 24 of the New York State Municipal
Home Rule Law.
