Support Group for New Moms Resumes in Mahopac

Ā TheĀ “New Momā€Ā Support GroupsĀ will finally reconvene in-personĀ beginning Wednesday, March 23,Ā at the Mahopac LibraryĀ in Putnam. The groupĀ will meetĀ fromĀ 1:30 to 3:30 pmĀ inĀ the Lakeview Activity RoomĀ and continue weekly. All meetings areĀ facilitated by certified lactation consultantsĀ and registered nurses from the maternal child health division of the Putnam County Department of Health. Each has expertise on topics ranging from nutrition and breastfeeding to infant sleeping and developmental milestonesĀ and more. Ā

ā€œWe are hopeful that the return of the in-person component will bring people together in a safe, supportive environment where they are encouraged to share their experiences,ā€ saidĀ maternal-child health nurse and certified lactation consultant, Diane Liscia. ā€œBecoming a new parent can be an isolating experience, particularly during the last 2 years.ā€Ā

Ā Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Putnam residents were eligible for postpartum home visits from a registered nurse. Many of the visits were for lactation support, and referrals often came from hospitals or doctors. The pandemic forced lactation support services toward virtual models. In-person groups are open to all with children from newborn to three years of age. There is no cost to attend the group. Ā

Future support groups are being planned in different locations across Putnam County. For new locations and times, check back at www.putnamcountyny.com/healthĀ or the health departmentā€™s Facebook page specifically for parents and caregivers at www.facebook.com/putnamparents.
